Works perfectly and made my vacation carefree!I bought the cup 2 cycles ago because I knew that my period would fall on our anniversary trip to Cancun!! Ugh! I didn't know what I was going to do because we had so many water activities planned as well as long day trips. When I first received my cup, I first started using it a couple of days into my cycle. The first day, I don't think I put it in well, and could feel it. (It didn't hurt at all, but just had that sensation that you have when your tampon is full). I read some great tips that helped. 1) using the folding method, put it in straight back, toward your tailbone (kind of keeping it parallel to the ground), not up, like you would a tampon. 2) wet the opening of the cup with a bit of water before folding and that lubricates it perfectly. 3) relax.Once I did that, it was perfect a I couldn't feel it. Practicing kegal exercises also helped, especially during that first cycle. That first cycle only lasted a couple of more days, so not much bleeding and I never leaked and only had to change it in the morning and evening. Super easy. I actually changed it more frequently so I could practice before my vacation, but it wasn't necessary. So, here I am on my 2nd cycle with the cup and on my anniversary trip in Cancun and I am taking the time to write a review! Why?? Because it has been life changing! No kidding! I was worried what my 2 heaviest days would be like and it was amazing, almost like I wasn't on my period. I have been snorkling, caving, biked through the jungle, long day trips to the the ruins, long days laying on the beach, etc. without having to worry about my period! The bathrooms here are awful and I don't have to worry about trying to find one to change my tampon! I can really go 8-12 hours!! I love that you can still use the restroom like normal (both pee and poop) without having to empty your cup. Seriously, I am so grateful I gave this a try because it has made this trip so amazing when I was dreading having to deal with my period. I will never go back to tampon unless I need one in an emergency situation. 5If you're considering the switch, do it!Having used the Diva Cup for 5+ years now, I was extremely hesitant on switching brands. However, the Diva Cup costs 10 dollars more than this one, and so I gave it a go. I'm glad I did.I purchased Size 1 in Transparent Blue.I love that it comes in multiple colors. My Diva Cup gets stained after a while (yes, even with boiling water after each cycle), and I replace them about once every six months. I expect this will last about the same amount of time, but I noticed 2 things about the Athena Cup that make it not only a cheaper option than the Diva Cup, but a better one, in addition to the fact that there are a choice of colors that should, I hope, make the staining less of a glaring disaster.1. If you are a "shallow" girl like me, or if your cervix sits low, this is the better alternative. The cup is marginally stouter than the Diva Cup (I have not measured, but would guess only by 3-4 cm), and the stem is about a centimeter shorter. Also important -- the Diva Cup has a "hollow" stem, which means blood or debris will get caught inside the stem. Yuck. No such issue with the Athena Cup!2. The material is softer! Flexible and gentle, the way my Diva Cups feel *after* a few uses to loosen them up. Due to the nature of the product, the fact that it starts out this way doesn't mean it will get *too* loose either... it's like buying a pair of shoes already broken in. A big thumbs up from me!Cute colors, great product, and it's $10 cheaper than the Diva Cup. If you're considering the switch, do it! Save yourself $10 and get a nice customizable color and a better product while you're at it. :) 5And I couldn't be more happier that I purchased the Athena brandThis is my first time purchasing a menstrat cup. And I couldn't be more happier that I purchased the Athena brand. I sterilized it before use (as it stated in the direction booklet) as the next cycle came. I thought the cup was going to melt for some reason. (Don't judge me) lol. But it held its shape well, And is strong silicone. I read the directions and other reviews from women that informs you to insert your finger around the base of the cup to form a seal . I found it VERY complicated to insert a finger into the vagina while the cup is inside there. I just folded the cup forming a 'U' shape, inserted, pushed up as far as I could and as I was I pulling back down I felt a suction feeling, so I figured it was okay and just wore a pad with it. Although it did leak it was very minimum. Remember to check your cup every couple of hours. I know It wouldn't last 12 hours for me and I don't consider myself a heavy bleeder. After you urinate then wipe, and if notice a tinge of blood, then its time to dump it and reinsert, do to it being full or inserted incorrectly. It will feel a bit uncomfortable at first but after a while it will become unnoticeable. I do suggest wearing a panty liner, atleast until you've mastered it. I'm only on day 3 and no more little leaks for me, not even through the night . I ordered a size 1. I do have children but only by section. Size one is perfect for me. I clean the cup with tissue instead of rinsing in the sink (I only have one bathroom and share it with my children). And cleaning it in the tub while showering works for me as well. It is a messy job. Just be sure to clean it up properly. It does come with a informative direction booklet, but just do what works for you boo Hope this helps.Peace & Love 5Dangerous, AvoidI'm a longtime cup user and was stupid in trying this brand. This is from China, not FDA approved, not medical grade silicone and has had an apparent history of causing illness to users over time.It also is simply just a poor design, doesn't seal and pop open easily at all.I'm frustrated that I didn't do my research like I had with previous cups. I was in a pinch to just get one soon and I got this as a result.Regardless of whether it works for you or not, this is an unsafe and unregulated product, made from likely harmful chemicals and materials.Pay the extra $10-$20 more and get a cup that won't cause illness later in life.Your health is worth as much. 1Tip is too shortI was so excited to receive my cup. I tried to use it today for the first time, and it was a horrible, scary experience.I thought the cup was stuck "in there".I spent sooo much time trying to take it out. This cup is defective because the tip is soo short, that when I tried to take it out, it kept slipping off my nails/fingers and with the suction and shirt tip it was almost impossible to get it out. I had my husband ask try to help and I even thought I would have to go to the doctor to have it removed! It was soo scary!Again it was very very hard to remove bed the tip is too short to be able to grab it properly and pull it out.Very disappointed because I was really looking forward to this. :( 1Fantastic!I can't believe I didn't try this sooner! When I first heard of this concept I thought it was weird and possibly unhealthy. Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Barbados and I knew it was around the time that my period should come. My period is usually fairly heavy for a few days before it lightens up so tampons are pretty much useless to me. There was no way I was going to spend all that money and not be able to swim in that beautiful ocean! So, I bought this one and a Luna cup. I read a lot of reviews and decided it would be best to try a couple of different brands since I needed them on short notice and wouldn't be able to try them before my trip. As predicted, my period started the second day in Barbados. I tried the Luna cup first. It worked beautifully! I could not believe how well it worked! Inserting it was a breeze and it stayed in place. Only leaked once on my heaviest day but only a little bit. A few days in, I suddenly had difficulty getting it seated properly so I decided to switch and give the Athena cup a try. It looks and feels very similarly to the Luna cup. It inserted without issue and stayed in place well with no leakage. I continued to use the Athena cup throughout the remainder of my period. I love them both! I will never go back to using pads! My favorite thing about using these cups is the cleanliness! There is no odor like with using pads! You do have to be okay with getting your hands a little dirty in the process but to me that's no big deal. Nothing a little soap and water can't take care of! Nothing to fill your garbage can with everyday! In the long run, it will be much cheaper as well! At the risk of grossing everybody out, I am going to recommend this to every woman I know! It is fantastic and I can't say that enough!Oh, there is one little thing I didn't like about it. The stem at the bottom feels a little annoying after several days. I liked having it there because it helps to know if it is staying in place. But after a while, I just get tired of feeling it there. Still not enough to make me stop using it! 5Buy the Athena Menstrual Cup, You Won't Regret It!I was worried that the cup wouldn't work for me, but it's working great so far and NO LEAKS! I previously bought a generic menstrual cup on the Wish App. It leaked every time I used it so I tossed it out after a few months of trying. I knew I wanted to use a cup, but I didn't want to break the bank either. Athena Cup is affordable and has decent reviews, so I bought one! I decided to not buy any tampons this month, so that I have no choice but to make this work for me lol! So far, so good! I will say I'm plus sized (size 20) and although that won't play a role in how heavy your period is, it MAY factor in to how comfortable inserting the cup may be for you. The only way I can insert a menstrual cup is while sitting on the toilet. It's very difficult to twist it once it's inside (imagine Winnie the Pooh) BUT that's not a fault of the cup, and as I continue to lose weight I'm sure any problems I have with insertion will go away. I carry extra weight in my belly and that's why I mention this because I scoured reviews looking to see if plus sized gals had trouble using a cup, and since we all carry weight differently not ALL plus sized women will have this issue. 5Good quality & nice fabric pouch tooThis is my first purchase of a menstral cup and I must have read a million reviews- all on different brands. First off- I'm pleased with the quality of this cup. I settled on Athena because the price was right, it came in colors I like (I heard they stain, so getting a purple, red or black will cut down on the ick factor), and it had a nice storage pouch. However, the biggest factor came from reading several reviews- the Athena Cup was a good mix of not too thin and not too thick.Being a new product for me, it takes some getting used to. On my 4th day, I feel like I have it under control. I wore a pantiliner (always do anyway) and carried a tampon, just in case. Never had to use the tampon.I'm probably getting close to menopause, so my flow isn't as much anymore. I was able to change it once every 24 hours, though my first day I waited a tad too long. Nothing my pantiliner couldn't handle. My daughter, however, is a teenager, and she's the one who was begging for me to purchase one for her (which is why I got one for myself). She had a heavy flow and goes through a super plus tampon every 2 hours on her first day. She was amazed that she only needed to empty the cup twice a day- once before school and once after school. This will be a life changer for her, for sure! She immediately complained about the tab on the cup, but I told her to wait before trimming it. She's glad she waited, because she became used to it, and liked the length for easier removal and insertion. So- don't be too quick to trim it!Anyway. That's my take on it. Good quality cup. Nice storage pouch. Take the plunge and get one! I'm so excited to not have to buy tampons any more!!!Update: It s been over a year now and I haven t gone back to tampons or pads. Neither has my teenager. They re great and I m very pleased with the life change I ve made! As a matter of fact, I just purchased ANOTHER pair of these for both my daughter and myself. (We don t share them. Eww! Stop thinking like that!) Anyway, there s nothing wrong with the original ones. The originals have held up nicely. Though I wash it thoroughly, my purple cup has a patina to it now, but that s no worry. It works just as nicely as it did new. I ordered a second one to have as a spare or backup. Or, if I think it might hit while I m at work, I can leave my spare in it s nice little pouch in my glove box and I m all set. I even used it while camping this past Summer! Not easy, but still better than packing out the disposable pads/tampons. Speaking of that, I haven t done the math, but I know I ve saved a ton of money by moving away from disposables, but this wasn t about the money anyway. I just know I ve saved a lot. Take the plunge and try it out. 5Just amazing give it a fair shot. There s definitely a learning curve with this thing. I m pretty comfortable with my body and my first experience trying to insert this was frustrating and just weird. However, if I didn t make it work it would be money down the drain, so I gave myself a break and just used tampons and persevered the next day. Let me tell you, once I got it, it was so easy for me to get it in and out and I don t even notice it. I ve had 2 periods now with it and I m totally in love. The number one selling point to me was that I could sleep in it which means I can continue to sleep naked even on my period!! I have successfully done so for a total of about 5 nights without any leakage. I m blown away by this little thing.A couple of tips on usage:1) for me, it s easiest if I lie down on my back on my bed to insert it. I probably could do it standing up now, but I m always able to get to my bed to insert, so why make it harder if it doesn t need to be 2) C-fold works best for me in terms of it opening up easily once inside with little to no twisting and turning to get it to pop open. It s not the smallest fold, but believe me, it can fit. Don t just shove it in there. Wiggle and ease it in. If you try to just ram it in, it definitely hurts and brings little success.Overall, I m super impressed and so glad I finally tried this! I m sleeping naked on my period, saving money, and reducing waste. I absolutely love this cup! 5I must say that I am very glad that I didI had never tried cups before and was extremely hesitant about using this product, but decided to try it after my sister was raving about hers. I must say that I am very glad that I did. I purchased a size large because I have had a kid, albeit 20 years ago, but I have given birth before. It was very awkward to use at first. I washed and boiled the cup prior to using just to make 100% sure it was clean. I did also watch several YouTube videos on menstrual cups as well. That really helped. There are some really good videos that you can reference. I always used a backup method, a panty liner, the entire time just in case there were leaks. But it proved to be for no reaso. As I never had any. I also was able to wear the cup for 12 sometimes 14 hours at a time. I do not recommend trying to remove it in a public place if you're a first time user. Only because I found that you'd need a certain level of privacy and access to soap and running water. I guess curiosity got the best of me because I saw NOTHING at all and was wondering what was going on down there. I do also recommend that once inserted, run your finger around the outside of the cup to ensure it is fully 'inflated' and not puckering or folded. That's where the leaks come from. Also, don't wait until your period starts to try it out. This may leave you frustrated, and will allow you time to get comfortable with insertion. I am a fully committed user and will probably never go back to pads or tampons! Yes, it was that much of a positive experience! I haven't tried any other brands, but I fully recommend and will keep using this one for now. I am also going to repurchase so I have a backup. Just be sure to fully clean your hands before and after each insertion, and to sanitize the cup in boiling water for 5-7 minutes between me natural cycles. The carrying pouch was a nice touch as well. For anyone who is freaked out by the thought of handling a full cup, don't be. It wasn't that bad and you actually don't lose as much fluid as you would think. I think in the end you'll be happier for making the switch to the menstural cup, I absolutely am! 5
