Customer Reviews

The light is the best feature! No more frustration reading labels, menus, or package inserts!I can see! You know the joke that the older you get, the more manufacturing companies keep reducing the size of the print on bottles, cans, packaging and package inserts! Well, even with my glasses I can't read these things any more. I keep one of these magnifiers in my purse, an one in the kitchen. No more frustration! The light is essential for seeing in dimly lit stores and low light restaurants. Especially useful for reading the microscopic text on directions inserts and ingredients lists on food labels. Small print in some magazines is easily readable now! (Think Dr.'s waiting rooms). People often ask me where I got it.Yes the light is situated on only one side of the magnifying glass so the light feature is easier to use if this is held in the right hand. The magnification still works when used with the left hand, and although a bit awkward, you can turn the glass around and use the light. Maybe some day they will put the light on both sides for us lefties. In the mean time, that is a minor issue, certainly no deal breaker. I can still use it easily with my right hand. It's very light weight. It is amazing how many times a day I use this great product. I'm sure you will find it very useful too! 5More magnification pleaseOverall the quality of construction seems very good, however, this glass doesn't magnify enough for me. It says it's 2 times magnification, but the small spreadsheet print that I'm trying to read with it doesn't appear to double in size with the glass. If I get another, I will definately make sure it's at least says 3X, then I might actually get 2X. Also, I get very distinct reflection from overhead lights that make reading even more difficult. This might not be a problem laying in bet reading a book, but if you are at a desk where there is a light overhead, you may have a problem viewing your material.Helpful Hint: When I first unfolded the handle and used the glass, it felt awkward because the weight on the opposite side of the handle was pulling down on the glass. Initially, I had opened the handle to the point where it was straight up and down with the glass frame. I later discovered that the handle opens further so that it extends past the frame. Make sure you open the handle completely; this balances out the glass so that it doesn't feel awkward.I found this video link which shows the proper extension of the handle:"[...]" 3Perfect for reading the small printI have bought four of these. I first bought one for my Grandfather for a gift and when he opened it my Mother had to have one so I ordered her one. Then I made a mistake and gave hers to her in front of my Aunt who then wanted one. Then I decided I needed one because I cannot read the labels of bottles and boxes of products. I am not going to show them to anyone else because I am tired of ordering them. They work great. The light is nice and bright and the glass is bent for reading. Unlike others where it is straight you then have to move it back and forth to read, this one is already made that way so you just hold it above what you want to read. Everyone I have bought one for loves it. My Mom told me she wants one for her desk and one for by the phone. I told her to order it herself because Amazon is gonna think I am hoardering these. They already come with batteries so you don't need to order any. They fold up perfect for a drawer. Worth every penny! 5User Boo-Boo, on a great product!!Update to original review: Well, I take back what I originally said about this product. I've got to be honest & fair, and admit that I did not realize it required a battery change on occassion. (Thought it was a sealed unit.)When another person gave me the message to "change the batteries," I realized my stupid error. Purchased another unit AND additional replacement batteries. Good as gold! This really is a great product; I want to make sure any reviews I submit are well-researched and accurate. Thanks to my fellow "AmazonIan" for pointing out (what should have been ...) the obvious.---- Original review/updated rating ----I purchased one of these babies as it had all the features I was looking for. It's one of the largest hand-held magnifying I had seen; very well lit - even distribution - for clear reading. However, it didn't even last eight months! Just up and quit on me; I hope they can get the issues resolved, and soon. 5Light did not work, otherwise an average magnifierThe light didn't work, so I'm returning the unit. I would have replaced the batteries as a test, but the screw would not loosen. If you buy this magnifier, I recommend making sure that you can remove the screw before your 30 day return window closes. The magnifying glass itself works decently except that there's more distortion than I find acceptable. It's not terrible, but it is annoying. I'm hoping that this unit isn't typical of Carson. Judging by the favorable reviews, I expect that it's not typical.Instead of ordering a replacement of this magnifier, I'm ordering two different Carson magnifiers. One is the SG-10, a 3.5" round 2x Suregrip magnifier with a ***glass*** lens. There was just too much distortion for me in the plastic lens of the magnifier I'm returning. The other Carson magnifier I've ordered is the "5x MiniBrite LED Lighted Slide-Out Aspheric Magnifier". I made these choices because distortion is probably more of a problem in larger lenses, so I want glass for my larger magnifier, and because I only need the LED's for close up electronic work, where a smaller more powerful magnifier is an advantage. I think the two will serve me better than the single rectangular magnifier.Another factor is the battery situation. I'm apprehensive about the durability of the tiny screw used to open the battery compartment on this magnifier, and I'm concerned about the cost of replacing button batteries. The "5x MiniBrite LED Lighted Slide-Out Aspheric Magnifier" that I've ordered to replace it uses AAA batteries; I can use my Eneloop rechargeable batteries for it at much lower cost than button batteries. The two magnifiers I ordered cost a total of about $4.50 more than the rectangular one, but I'll recoup the cost difference in battery savings by using rechargeable AAA's. 3I liked it enough to buy another.I use this a lot, for very short periods of time, mainly for quick glances of small print. A couple of times, I used it to read a few pages of print, and it worked very well.At only 2X, you'd think it's underpowered to be useful. But it's large area makes it very easy to use. It's not necessary to get close to the magnifier or to keep it too close to the subject matter. This is a problem with using devices with higher magnification. The is a general purpose device, well constructed, with bright, even lighting. The slide switch is easy to find and use. The lens, acrylic I think, is not without mild aberration at the edges, but this is not an expensive item.Changing the batteries will require a small Philips screwdriver, but shouldn't be difficult. This so handy I have two. 4Not as good as my previous Brookstone reading lighted magnifierWorks OK for this small font world. Needed to replace a similar one purchased from Brookstone many years ago, for myself and mother. This Carson is not similar in quality as to brightness or distribution of light, nor weight of item, but neither it is as high in cost. The Brookstone glass became scratched, the ratchet to hold the handle in place broke and the light has faded. The Brookstone included a nice leather case. It had a tube light extending across the top and lit the entire magnified area. It is no longer for sale on the Brookstone sight. The Carson provides a bubble wrap bag for protection. A rectangular is better than round for reading a page. Only the light on this one comes from a corner and does not light the entire area. I'd buy several Brookstones if I could. 4Definitely worth the price! This is a great little magnifier, with a larger than normal viewing window for a hand held. I am severely nearsighted, with the aging eye need for reading glasses, and I also have glaucoma and a very aggressive cataract in one eye. Since I am a writer, using my thesaurus and dictionary is a regular part of my work routine, but I can barely read that fine print anymore. This little device gives me an edge on that. It's comfortable to hold, and the light is just bright enough to illuminate the page. Works really well when I am up late at night, chasing my muse. I liked it so much, I got two more for vain male members of the family who won't admit they need new glasses. LOL.I'd love have a case for this, to protect it on my desk. Also a left handed model would be nice for the southpaws, because while you can hold it and use it in the left hand, the LED lighting would be in your face. 5Magnifold MagnifyerI have diminished eyesight and need a magnifier for almost all my reading. This Carson Optical is good but doesn't magnify as much as I think a good piece of glass should. If one has good eyes and looking at small print, this may be an appropriate piece of equipment but otherwise, it just doesn't magnify enough for me to be useful when reading a newspaper. The quality of the Magnifer is excellent and the light shining from the bulb is more than adequate. The handle folds up nicely, it is light, very durable and the entire piece is well constructed.I will definitely be keeping the Magnifold Magnifer because of the quality and it does help for quick reads. However, those with poor eyesight looking for much larger magnification over a prolonged period of time should perhaps look elsewhere. 4Excellent high-quality lens(Reminder: If this magnifier is going to be rattling around in a purse or pocket along with keys and pocket change, to keep the nice big lens from scratching...Carry it around in a thick, clean fleece/cotton sock. I'm serious!)I purchased this for my mom who has macular degeneration and has difficulty reading menus in restaurants. She says it's the best lighted magnifier that she has ever had.I'm buying two more so she has one in her purse, one at the kitchen table and one in bed.Addendum: 10/23/2011...Buying one more because my mom loves her Carson Optical Lighted Magnifold Magnifiers...But she is absolutely paranoid about losing/breaking any of them. Here's a spare, mom...Stop worrying about it.Follow-up: 11/8/2012...Taking away two stars for the batteries and battery compartment issue: If you are creating a product aimed at people with poor eyesight, why design it to use multiple tiny button cell batteries that can only be accessed with a micro Phillips screwdriver?Honestly...What were they thinking? My Mom can't possibly replace the batteries by herself.Additionally: As the batteries get weaker, the LED light becomes slowly and gradually more dim. My Mom didn't notice this until I saw her straining to read a menu with it in a dark restaurant. After I replaced the PITA batteries and the LED was a full brightness she said "Damn! I though my eyesight was getting worse!"(I'd rather the damn thing just use a single AAA battery that would be full brightness and just cut off when the charge gets low.)PS. One can buy the #389 button cell batteries on Amazon in bulk packs to save money...You will get reamed if you buy them individually at local drug stores.Follow-up 05/09/2014:...Re-added one star. The lights in the units purchased in 2011 finally pooped out due loose connections to the batteries in the handle after years of flexing the handle daily...2-1/2 years of use is not bad at all for this type of product at $10 bucks a pop.I bought two more for a 2014 Mother's Day gift to replace 'em. 4
