Customer Reviews

They work nearly as advertised, but aren't super comfortableSo these do work. They lower the volume as opposed to blocking the sound (like a foam earplug would). However, at least for me, you do lose the feeling of the music. You lose a lot of highs. Mids sound fine, maybe a tad muddled. Bass sounds fine too. But losing the highs definitely takes away from the soul of the music. Now, with that being said, it is MUCH better than foam ear plugs. It *IS* like turning down the volume, but it's also like switching from your expensive home audio system to a portable bluetooth speaker. The genre of music DOES matter. For anything with instruments I almost never wear these. I'd rather hear the full body of music. But for EDM these things are LIFE SAVERS. Er, ear savers, I guess. EDM is more about the lows and mids and less about the highs, so these earplugs don't ruin the sound as much. I was just a few rows away from the stage during a Bassnectar show, so I was close to some gnarly loud speakers. Not only were my ears very well protected, but everything still sounded great. My friends had to retreat to the back because their ears were hurting so much, but I was able to stay up front.Later in the year I purchased "EarPeace HD Concert Ear Plugs - High Fidelity Hearing Protection for Music Festivals, DJs & Musicians (Standard, Red Case)" (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076VTXWBP/). In comparison the EarPeace was much more comfortable. The Etymotics start to dig into your ear and become uncomfortable after a while. The EarPeaces fit much more softly in your ear. However, the Etymotics had far superior sound quality than the EarPeaces. The EarPeaces sounded much more muddied than the Etys. Granted, I only tried the mid-grade sound dampening filter of the EarPeaces (they came with three filters, most dampening, some dampening, least dampening). Next time I will try the least to see how they compare to the Etys. Now back to the Etys. I never tried the foam plugs. The carrying case sucks, it's difficult to use and open. Also, don't get caught up on having a lanyard. With both the Etys and the EarPeaces neither plug would simply fall out of your ear without coercion. And when you take out the plugs and use the lanyard to rest them on your shoulders, it honestly feels like the lanyard could fall off me at any moment. The EarPeaces didn't come with a lanyard, which had me worried. But when using them in the field I realized I didn't need it and I was better off putting them directly back into their case anyway. (Which, btw, EarPeace has the superior case). So yes, the Etymotics do work. They don't work great, although they work better than EarPeace. They aren't very comfortable, however, I've found that you can't rely on someone else's definition of comfort. Everyone's ear canal is shaped different. 4Like the three bears, these are just right.I purchased 7 different brands of acoustic earplugs for an upcoming concert, based on amazon and youtube reviews. It's been a long time since I've been to a show and I currently suffer from ear related issues and tinnitus. Out of all the other brands these ones have the proper balance of rigidness and flexibility. I am able to quickly insert and remove these. They are not the most comfortable but give me a perfect seal and the confidence to wear these to a loud show. These are the ones to buy. 5These are a godsend!!!My audiologist recommended these after I damaged my inner ear during a rock concert. I've been using them in movie theaters and they a perfect. The sound is not muffled or fuzzy, just softer. It's just like turning the volume down. I can still hear well and my hearing feels more balanced (only o e ear was damaged). They are also far more comfortable than I thought they'd be. 5Good Evolution of the ER20/ETY PlugsA nice evolution over the old style ER20/ETY plugs with the interchangeable eartips. As a bagpiper protecting my hearing from the loud noise of the pipes while retaining clarity of the sound is essential. I had been using the old style ETY plugs but found them uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time. These with the foam eartips I can wear indefinitely without bother. If you're new to the whole ER20 thing, I recommend starting out with the universal fit to determine which eartip option works best for you then just stock up on more eartips of the type that best fits you for the most economical solution. 5Good, but get the universal kit so that you can find an option that is comfortableI went to a concert where my seat was way too close to some speakers and have paid for it by now having permanent tinnitus. It sucks, wear protection. To keep it from getting worse when practicing with my band/at loud places where my ears now hurt I got some musician earplugs. The Westone ones cost more than the competitors I saw, but I went by it being a much better known company than some of the other ones on Amazon. I also bought the similar style Etymotic ones (TRU Universal WM25).Both the Westone and Etymotic gently reduce noise levels yet allow you to have a conversation. HOWEVER, the Westone ones are orders of magnitude more comfortable to wear. I can wear these for a few hours of practice and there is no real ear irritation; just perhaps readjusting them if they seem to be starting to slide out. In contrast, the Etymotic hurt to even put in, much less wear. The Foam inserts for them make it more manageable so you can wear it for a while, but because the triple flange inserts are so irritating I like the Westone way more. 4Saving my ears but not killing my live mixThese are great at the price. I mix live bands and they come in very handy on nights with extra loud bands. They allow me to still hear most of what I need to hear and mix. I do take them in and out a lot during a set to make sure I m not missing anything, but once I get the band dialed in I stick them in to help save my ears and can still hear all the parts. They aren t perfect and like I said if I think I hear something I pull them out and really listen, but for the money I think this was a great investment to help protect my hearing that I need to do my job day in and day out 5as I could forsee easily losing pieces if not carefulPackage arrived timely with everything included - two sets of silicone plugs, one set of foam plugs, one set of filters, cord and a carry case. All pieces will fit in the carry case, although I'm not sure I'd leave all pieces in during an excursion to a concert, as I could forsee easily losing pieces if not careful. Used the normal sized earplugs and seemed to fit just fine. Tried pulling the filter out of normal sized plugs to swap with the larger sized plugs that came in package to see which fit better, but was concerned I was going to rip the silicone. I never did get them apart as I didn't want to rip the plugs. I tested against some basic silicone (3M) plugs (with no filter) that I use for yardwork and quite honestly couldnt tell much difference (perhaps my hearing isn't sensitive enough). Both reduced the concert noise to a level where i could hear and enjoy the music fine, but no ringing/buzzing in my ears after 4 hours of concert level music. I'm sure I'll continue use these, but for me I'm just not sure if I'd buy them again as they're considerably more expensive than the plugs I tested them against. 4Awesome for concert while in pit/main floor crowdFantastic! I bought these to wear at a recent rock concert at a small, loud venue. I knew the crowd was going to be exuberant and I wanted to be in it so I was worried that the regular ER20 with the long stem might pose a problem, so I went with these low-profile versions instead. They worked beautifully. Was the music as sharp and clear as if I hadn't worn earplugs? No.HOWEVER:Were my ears hurting and ringing by the end of the night? No.Could I hear everything well enough to still feel like I was hearing them loud and live, including guitar and soft vocals? Yes.Could I still hear people around me? Yes.Did they stay in my ears comfortably through all three bands' sets during which I was in the pit the whole time getting shoved around, jumping up and down, singing, sweating, and having a blast? Yes. Yes. Yes.I bought the universal fit package because I have a hard time wearing ear buds and so I was unsure of the fit if I only got the standard and I only had a few days before the concert. When they arrived, I put the standard fit in to see how they were and to get used to them before the show. They did seem to go in a little far and I could feel the stems but, given other reviews, I thought maybe it was just something to get used to. After about a half hour of wearing them, they actually hurt more and I took them out, swapped out the standard tips for the large tips, reinserted them and they did not hurt at all.I did not bother to remove the tabs either because they do aid in the removal of the earplugs. With the angle these plugs sit in my ears, I could swivel the tab around so it didn't just stick straight out. Everyone's ears are a little different though so I can't say if this would work for anyone else. (Though I also bought a pair of these in just the standard size for my sister who was also going to the same show and she swiveled the tabs around too to keep them more out of the way.)The low profile earplugs were nice too in that I wasn't worried about an elbow to the ear knocking the plug further in or completely out.I highly recommend these earplugs to anyone attending concerts, especially if you know you're going to want to be part of the main floor/pit crowd. 5Wish they'd offer a Comply foam tip optionI'm a bass player in a rock band (or three). These are my second set from Etymotic (others are the original ER20). They work, sort of and they're cheap, but they're uncomfortable and cut way more HF than I was hoping based on the description. I really wish they'd make them compatible with Comply foam; I really hate triple flange. And given the mid and high frequency attention, I often find myself pulling them out slightly, which kind of makes them more like expensive cotton balls. I probably need to look into better options (Westone?). 2Works well and good value but don't expect miracles. After listening with my old foam earplugs at 110db rock concerts and hearing totally muffled sound music, I had high hopes for the ER20XS Etymotic High Fidelity Earplugs. Last night at a Big Bad Voodoo Daddy concert (highly recommended) I got my first chance to try them. They were a big improvement over my old foam earplugs and I would buy them again, but at the same time, users should not expect miracles. The description of "20-dB equal sound reduction across the spectrum of hearing" is a bit of a stretch. As with foam earplugs, they attenuate higher frequencies more than lower ones. To Etymotic's credit they show a attenuation chart in the product description which pretty accurately corresponds to my observations, i.e. they attenuate somewhat more at the higher frequencies, but above 1500 HZ they have a better response than foam plugs. To summarize, for the price the ER20xs earplugs are a good value and a big improvement over foam earplugs even though the frequency response is not exactly flat across the spectrum. 4
