You need to install it in the door latching bracket facing out. If you install it facing the front of the vehicle, it won't work as well. One hand on the open window and the other on the handle, with most of the weight on the handle. My wife is not a light weight and it works well. 5A wonderful aid in getting in and out of the car.Well there is nothing like the original. Don't buy those off brand thin plastic ones, this one has a longer "tooth" that fits down in the car hook better, thus giving more stability to the person who is using it. It's terribly helpful, and we'll always have one on hand. Has a good long-enough handle for any size hand, and feels very substantial. Very pleased that I found this. 5Thoughtful product for ANYONE of any ageBought this to keep in the car for an "elderly" friend (well, she's older than I am) to use when I take her shopping. Then I hurt my knee and found out personally what a great item this little thing is! I'm tall - my car sits close to the ground, so this was very valuable for a week or so while my knee healed. Hope I never submerge my car, but like the idea that I can cut my seatbelt if necessary and/or break a window to escape. 5Sturdy!I liked the red thick handle so it is easy to see and comfortale to grip. I purchased one at a home department store for my father and mother in law and they found these very useful. This one, however, is better as it is larger and fatter. The product fits into the steel loop inside the door frame of all cars and just sits ready to bear the weight of a passenger loading and/or unloading. It helps them lift up out of the seat, and lean to get into the seat, then easily lifts out and can store down by the side of the seat until needed. The slit in the handle can be used (along with the bent shape of the insertion rod) to hook onto the seat belt to draw it forward and over the passenger without the strain of the passenger twisting to find the strap behind them. The steel insertion rod has a dull point on it for breaking windows in the case of an emergency; a point must be made that the handle must be OUTSIDE of the car in order to rescue a trapped passenger. You can store it in your purse as you leave the car to be sure; however the handle is heavy (not too heavy for use, but heavy for a purse). Excellent product! Great seller. 5I finally feel safe getting in the carI am a large woman and over 70. Naturally I had a hard time getting into a lot of cars. OMG I just hold it and can pull myself in and it also helps getting out also. I don't know if all cars are able to, but I can put it in sticking out or straight with the car. Believe me I take it if we are riding with someone else too. Some people commented how some of these grab bars seem flimsy, but this one seems very stable and as heavy as it is it has to have the metal going all the way through the handle. It does fit but attaching to my Hyundai Sonata takes a little effort to fit securely without jiggling. Bought it for an elderly family member to aid in getting in and out of the car. it is not working as intended. The person does not find it helpful so I guess it was a bust for that reason.Why did the person find it unhelpful? I am realizing the usefulness of such devices depends completely upon how a person is used to getting into a car and the particular support needs of the person needing extra help. Placing a grip at that particular location is not helpful for the elderly person for which this device was purchased. If the gadget if placed in the direction of the door, there is not enough room for the person to get out. If it is placed the other direction (facing outward away from the door or in the same direction as the open door), it is too far away to be useful. Hope my explanation made sense. 3Pretty nifty toolI purchased this for my 80 year old mother to use to help her get out of her car easier. My son had seen something similar but it wasn't built very sturdy. This one feels as if it has the steel bar all the way through the handle, then the handle is coated with a soft, easy to grip material. You place the protruding piece of heavy metal into the U shaped"loop" on your car frame where your door would latch into and it grabs it in one of the slots in the metal piece, you have the handle facing outwards and you can press down on it to help yourself out of the car. It holds up to 350lbs.This has really helped my mom with getting in and out of the car!It also has a seatbelt cutter and a window breaker if you are ever in such a situation you might need one. and weighs less than 1lb. 5Works great as a car grab barBought to help an elderly Mother (94) get in and out of a car. It has helped tremendously. It provides a handle for her to hold on to when lowering into the car seat from the wheelchair and also gives her leverage to push herself up out of the seat to a standing position. Have found with use that for her it works best with the red part of the bar facing outwards towards the open passenger door when getting in the vehicle and then the red part of the bar facing forward towards the front of the vehicle for getting out of the vehicle. Vehicle is a Mercury Gran Marquis. 5
